Cultural Proficiency Roundtable for King Staff

Every Wednesday, students at King Elementary are dismissed 90  minutes early.  On March 30th, while students were enjoying their extra free time, King staff members gained some in-depth knowledge of some of the different cultures that make up the student population.  The cultural demographic at King Elementary is a collection of over 15 countries and at least 20 languages.  In order to gain some cultural proficiency in some of these cultures, King welcomed five Bilingual IMG_0322Community Outreach Workers  from neighboring schools to spend the afternoon discussing culture.

Issa Abdinoor from Edmunds Elementary came to discuss Somalian culture, Rina Lopez Solis from Oak Park & Findley Elementarys came to discuss El Salvador’s culture, Jennifer Shedd from Roosevelt High School came to discuss Vietnamese culture, Lilana Marquez from Samuelson Elementary came to discuss Southern Mexican culture and Mone Aye from Windsor came to discuss Burmese culture.

King staff members spent about 10 minutes listening to first hand knowledge of each of these five cultures and in some cases, tasted some local cuisine.
