African-American Legacy 2013
For the second year, Wells Fargo’s Black African-American Connection affinity group invited students in the Des Moines Public Schools to take part in and activity designed to promote diversity, education, leadership and financial literacy. The activity, called the African American Legacy Initiative, featured a competition among 4th and 5th grade students to create and display information on a topic that embodies the accomplishments of people of African descent or African American. Topics could include economics, the cultural arts, inventions, education, sports, medicine, or one of your choice.
Again, King students focused on Local Legacies – African Americans who have specifically helped the community of Des Moines. This year’s group of students chose to focus on Iowa State Representative Ako Abdul-Samad and one of Iowa’s oldest African-American communities, Willkie House, Inc.
Displays at King Elementary are on view in the atrium display case during February, which is historically Black History Month. During that period, students made a presentation to Wells Fargo judges and were graded on four criteria: originality, use of materials, knowledge of the people and events that inspired the display, and historical relevance. Winners were announced on February 18. A monetary prize will be awarded to the top three displays, along with a certificate.
First Place – $500 George Washington Carver Elementary (169 points)
Second Place – $250 Martin Luther King Elementary School (165 points)
Third Place – $100 Hubbell Elementary School (143 points)
