My name is Donnyta Alexander. I graduated from Grand View College with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and an Early Childhood endorsement. I also graduated from Philander Smith College with a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Administration. I am currently working on a master’s degree in Culturally Responsive Leadership & Instruction. While I have been teaching for 18 years in public schools, I have also served as a preschool teacher and/or director for 18 years.
In my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with my family. I have three children: Courtney, Charles, and Christian: two grandchildren: Trey and Lauryn, and a dog named Franklin (named for the kid in the Peanuts cartoon). When not hanging out with my family, I enjoy volunteering in the community, listening to music, watching television dramas, and going to the movies.

Hi! My name is Sara Bitting and I am one of the behavior strategists at King Elementary. This is my first year at King and I am so excited to join this team! I am from Des Moines and went to Jackson, Weeks, and Lincoln. After my years in Des Moines schools I graduated from Drake University. I absolutely love being a teacher and am excited to join the community at King. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, and gardening.

Hello King lions! I’m so excited to be to be a part of the King team this year as the art teacher. I grew up in the Des Moines area and recently moved back. I have a bachelors degree in art education and in studio ceramics from Northwest Missouri State University. After graduating in 2015, I spent 6 years in education in the Kansas City metro area. I currently live in Des Moines with my husband, our son, 2 dogs, and 1 cat. Outside of school my family spends our time playing board games, and cooking for our friends and family. I practice my own art through making pottery in my home studio.

My husband Jaime and I have three kids, Conner, Isabel and Aydan. My oldest graduated from Hoover High School in 2013 and my younger two went to the Downtown School and then Merrill until we moved out of the district. I spend my free time playing cello in multiple venues around town and in the studio.
I started with Des Moines Public Schools in August of 1999 and have been at King Elementary since 2014. Prior to that, I worked in the medical field. I have 2 children and 4 grandchildren and have been married to my husband, Jeff since 1982.
My name is Daniel Felts and I’m excited to be working with students at King Elementary. This is my 11th year teaching, mainly in classroom settings, so I’m excited to be working with and advocating for smaller groups of students. Hey King Lions! My name is Shanie Hubka and I teach 1st grade at King but I previously taught 5 years of special education. I grew up in Eastern Iowa and graduated from Simpson College in 2016. I live with my husband, Jordan, my son, Bo, and our cat, Gus. In my free time I love to go to the park with my family, read books, and binge Netflix. Hello! This is my second year with King as an associate. I love working with all the kiddos. I am married and have a son who is in second grade. I also have a mini zoo, as my husband would say, of 2.
Cathy Kearney is from Northwest Iowa and is an alumnus of Drake University. She teaches band in ten Des Moines Schools including here at King. Her main instrument is clarinet, but a fun part of her job is that she gets to play so many different instruments. They are ALL fun.
Cathy’s husband Pat is the TLC grant coordinator for the Johnston Community School District. They have one son, Brogan, who is studying music education at Drake University. They also love their rescue dogs, Billie and Mora.

My name is Tara Misra, and I am the school psychologist at King Elementary. I lived most of my life in Louisiana, and my parents are immigrants to the US.
I attended the University of California in Santa Cruz for my Bachelor’s Degree in 1998. I attained a Master of Science in Education from Baylor University in 2000. I met my husband in 1996 and became a mother in 2006. I was a teacher for 15 years and then returned to graduate school. I received a Specialist in School Psychology from Louisiana State University in Shreveport in 2018 and am a Nationally Certified School Psychologist.
I have worked for DMPS since 2019 and enjoy my work advocating for students and families.
I graduated from Iowa State in 2011. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, with an endorsement in ELL. I am currently working toward my Master’s Degree in Culturally Responsive Leadership and Instruction, as well as getting endorsements in Special Education.

Originally from Indianola, I’m excited to have come home to Iowa. In 2000 I left to attend Western Washington University. After earning my degree in Music Education, I decided to explore this fascinating world. I worked overseas from 2006 until June 2022. I’ve made my home in Japan, Brazil, Nigeria, South Africa, Angola and India. I enjoy listening to world music, learning languages (I speak Portuguese and a bit of Japanese), doing yoga, hiking, biking and reading fiction. I love to sing and have been learning the violin for a few years. Most of all I love teaching Elementary music, exploring and making music with students.

Natalie likes spending time on her phone and talking with her friends but she LOVES being a big sister to Angel. She’s also starting to do more chores at home. Angel is a busy toddler who LOVES to climb, run and make messes for mom or sister to clean up. As for me, I like to watch shows or movies on Netflix, listen and dance to music, and take care of my plant family. I am always up for learning something new too.
Elizabeth Worley
My name is Betsy Yates and I am an Academic Interventionist at King. I work with small group of students to practice math and reading skills. The 2021-2022 school year is my 12th year teaching at King and my 19th year teaching overall. My first six years of teaching I taught 5th grade and when I started at King I taught first grade for three years before moving to an interventionist position.
I am originally from Missouri and attended college at Truman State University and played on the golf team. While at Truman, I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and my Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. Since teaching at King I have also earned my Reading Endorsement from Upper Iowa University.
I have two teenagers and we stay busy with their activities and our dog. During the Covid-19 pandemic we started fostering kittens and haven’t stopped!
I am so excited to be returning to King and see our students learn and grow this year!!
