My name is Tiara Bales. I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa. This will be my 10th year teaching kindergarten at King Elementary. When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have 5 kids and 2 grand kids and another on the way. In my spare time I enjoy creating clip art, gardening, kayaking, and being outdoors.
This is my first year teaching, and I am thrilled to be a part of the King team! When I’m not at school, you’ll find me hanging out with my family: I’m married with five kids, two cats and a rescue pup. I love to travel, cheer on the Cubs, Colts and Hawkeyes, I am an avid reader and crafter. Finally, I just published my first children’s book this summer!
Hi! My name is Sara Bitting and I am one of the behavior strategists at King Elementary. This is my first year at King and I am so excited to join this team! I am from Des Moines and went to Jackson, Weeks, and Lincoln. After my years in Des Moines schools I graduated from Drake University. I absolutely love being a teacher and am excited to join the community at King. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, and gardening.
My name is Emma Bowman and I started working for Des Moines Public Schools in the fall of 2020. I am a part of the special education team, and help students who struggle with their behavior. I graduated from Wartburg College in 2019 with an undergraduate degree in social work, and received my Masters in Social Work from The University of St. Thomas in 2020. Cathy Kearney is from Northwest Iowa and is an alumnus of Drake University. She teaches band in ten Des Moines Schools including here at King. Her main instrument is clarinet, but a fun part of her job is that she gets to play so many different instruments. They are ALL fun.
Cathy’s husband Pat is the TLC grant coordinator for the Johnston Community School District. They have one son, Brogan, who is studying music education at Drake University. They also love their rescue dogs, Billie and Mora.

I have over 30 years of experience in Community Engagement, Development, and Outreach. My background is in Pastoral Studies, minor in Business Administration. I have worked in ministry, community consulting, community development, television journalism, and non profit organization. I have developed a wide range of relationships from state government to community alliances to help our King families and students flourish in their academic journey. I have been married to my lovely spouse Jody; a pediatrics nurse, for 15 years. We have 2 incredible kids. Aidan and Anna; our special needs angel. My hobbies are varied. I love my college sports. Chicago sport teams. I love Science Fiction movies. Mexican Soul Food. I enjoy traveling when doable. Mr. Donte T. Todd is a graduate of Alabama State University in Montgomery, AL with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education. A couple years later he decided to pursue and complete a Master’s degree at Kennesaw State University in Educational Leadership. Mr. Todd’s most recent educational accomplishment was the earning of his educational specialist degree in Secondary education with a concentration in history from Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, GA.
Mr. Donte Todd begin his career in Montgomery, AL as a full time substitute . He continued his career in South Atlanta, GA by teaching 4th, 2nd, 5th, and 6th grade! Mr. Todd exudes a love for great classroom management, building student relationships, and helping his students create and exceed expectations. He has served as a guest speaker on two separate engagements and loves to make educational songs students can relate to. He believes that every child is always one teacher away from being great! My name is Betsy Yates and I am an Academic Interventionist at King. I work with small group of students to practice math and reading skills. The 2021-2022 school year is my 12th year teaching at King and my 19th year teaching overall. My first six years of teaching I taught 5th grade and when I started at King I taught first grade for three years before moving to an interventionist position.
I am originally from Missouri and attended college at Truman State University and played on the golf team. While at Truman, I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and my Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. Since teaching at King I have also earned my Reading Endorsement from Upper Iowa University.
I have two teenagers and we stay busy with their activities and our dog. During the Covid-19 pandemic we started fostering kittens and haven’t stopped!
I am so excited to be returning to King and see our students learn and grow this year!!
