In math, we are working on number sense. Showing objects that represent numbers 1 – 10. Counting to 20, and writing numbers to 20.

First Grade News

First grade has been working on story structure during reading. Students are learning about setting, characters and the main idea of a story. They are also working on noting details in nonfiction text.

During math students have been working on counting, addition, subtraction and problem solving.  The students are learning these skills through math games as well as CGI story problems.

During science our students had the opportunity to have a naturalist come visit our classrooms. She brought many skins of animals from Iowa. The students learned about their habitat and how they survive here in Iowa.

We have had a great start to the school year students are already working hard. Please watch for their blue folders nightly and check them for homework or communication from the school.

Second Grade News

In reading, 2nd grade has been busy learning about cause and effect. They are learning how a cause is “why did it happen?”, and an effect is “what happened?”.  This has been an excellent topic for them because they are learning how their actions have consequences. The topic for Social Studies right now is a community. The students are able to define a community and give some examples. They are able to tell us what communities they are a part of.

In math, 2nd grade is learning about basic addition and subtraction. We are focusing on multiple types of word problems. The 2nd graders are developing their problem solving skills. In addition, we are learning about place value. They are able to identify number place value up to the hundreds, next we will go to the thousands place. Our 2nd graders are looking forward to next month because we will be taking a field trip to the apple orchard!

Third Grade News

In third grade math we have started out the school year by working with rounding numbers to the tens, hundreds and thousands place value.  We enjoyed learning a song, “We Will Round You” to help us remember the correct steps when rounding numbers.  We have also worked on measuring the passing of time by using analog clocks.  This week we started working on story problems and 3-digit addition and subtraction.  We look forward to a busy October where we will be perfecting these skills!

Fourth Grade News

In 4th grade this year at King Elementary, your child will be in a departmentalized grade level.  This means that your child will be taught literacy and social studies from Mrs. Studer, and math and science from Ms. Jenn.  Each day your child will start their day in their homeroom classroom and then spend the morning with one teacher and the afternoon with the other teacher. This new format will offer a great opportunity for your child to learn as much as they can.

In reading, we have been working on summarizing, cause and effect, identifying the author’s purpose, and finding the theme.  Each day we work on reading in a whole group setting.  Then we break down into small groups where skills can be broken down as needed.  We are 2 weeks away from our Unit #1 posttest.  It is important that each student read each day and study their spelling words.

In math, we are 2 weeks away from our unit #1 test.  We have been focusing on place value, rounding, and number types.  We will soon dive into word problems.  Basic facts are the foundation of math, so it is important to work on them each and every day.

Fifth Grade News

Both 5th grade blocks are off to a tremendous start! They are working hard to raise their scores. In Ms. Vandagriff’s room students are focusing in specific reading strategies such as: using context clues, inferring, and vocabulary in order to better understand the texts they read.

In Mrs. Fry’s class, students are focused on Order of Operations, Multi-digit Multiplication, Long Division, and Prime Factorization. We want to remind all students to bring their Respect folders every day and complete homework on time!

Thanks for all your support to help us reach our goal of being #1!
